Climate conditions in East Africa have transformed an insect that’s usually a quiet, solitary grasshopper into an overwhelming invasion of desert locusts. The locusts migrate and devour any crops in their way threatening food security for dozens of communities.

In 2020, California experienced some of the worst wildfires in its history. Massive areas were evacuated, thousands of acres destroyed.

On February 5, 2019, a cyclone shoved a bulk carrier into the edge of a reef on Rennell Island, cracking its hull. The fuel oil spill happened along the world’s largest raised coral atoll and just northwest of a UNESCO World Heritage site (source Wingtra).

All these devastating events have one thing in common: drones were used to analyse and mitigate the damage. In this lunch webinar we want to dive into the power of new technologies for disaster response.

About the Speaker

Stephanie started working with drones 7 years ago and is a founding employee of Wingtra. Her wealth of experience has placed her in charge of global sales operations. Wingtra’s high-tech drone is used by mapping professionals in various surveying applications such as disaster response and environmental monitoring.

Stephanie holds an M.A. in International Affairs and Governance from the University of St. Gallen (HSG). During her studies in St. Gallen, Buenos Aires and Tel Aviv, she was highly engaged in the areas of social business and humanitarian relief aid. While pursuing her academic education she worked as a personal assistant to a member of the Swiss National Council and a Cantonal Councillor of Zurich.

Her devotion for humanitarian affairs and the gathered political and technological expertise led her to become a member of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA). The SHA is a corps of around 700 experts who are on call in time of need to carry out Switzerland’s humanitarian aid projects abroad. Stephanie’s focal point lies on new technologies and drones for humanitarian rapid response.
